They figured it out, and exactly one carrier added support for it AFAIK, T-mobile... Unless by figure it out you meant not just build in support for native voicemail but also force carriers to support it... Making it work requires back end work on both ends.

At least AT&T and VZW let you use their voicemail apps on a non carrier phone, Sprint doesn't even do that so anyone on the fourth largest carrier is forced to use the GV workaround mentioned above or go to an alternate voicemail service like YouMail.

This from the same carrier that used to feature an unheard of level of Google Voice integration... Sigh. I'm pretty happy with Sprint overall, but little irritations like this and lack of hotshot on older plans is making the itch to switch stronger.
